Summary

'Merry Christmas!。。。every idiot who goes about with "Merry Christmas" on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding'

Dickens' story of solitary miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is taught the true meaning of Christmas by a series of ghostly visitors, has proved one of his most well-loved works。 Ever since it was published in 1843 it has had an enduring influence on the way we think about the traditions of Christmas。 Dickens' other Christmas writings collected here include 'The Story of the Goblins who Stole a Sexton', the short story from The Pickwick Papers on which A Christmas Carol was based; The Haunted Man, a tale of a man tormented by painful memories; along with shorter pieces, some drawn from the 'Christmas Stories' that Dickens wrote annually for his weekly journals。 In all of them Dickens celebrates the season as one of geniality, charity and remembrance。

This new selection contains an introduction by distinguished Dickens scholar Michael Slater discussing how the author has shaped ideas about the Christmas spirit, an appendix on Dickens' use of The Arabian Nights, a further reading list and explanatory notes。

Though I'd still just reccomed watching the Muppet adaptation, this is still a wonderful read, start to finish。 A classic that can be read in a day or two, not overstaying its welcome (a rare thing for Dickens)。 Perfect for sitting by the fireside in the days before Christmas。 Though I'd still just reccomed watching the Muppet adaptation, this is still a wonderful read, start to finish。 A classic that can be read in a day or two, not overstaying its welcome (a rare thing for Dickens)。 Perfect for sitting by the fireside in the days before Christmas。 。。。more

The actual story of A Christmas Carol is incredibly good and perfect to get you in the christmas spirit but after reading this, I found the novellas to be rather repetitive; a man who is rather depressed has a sudden serendipitous event that causes him to completely change his outlook on life?! An absolute, undisputed classic。 Dickens' vivid and sentimental writing is perfectly suited for Christmas。 No idea why I've not read this before, but it's going to be a tradition for me from here on。 An absolute, undisputed classic。 Dickens' vivid and sentimental writing is perfectly suited for Christmas。 No idea why I've not read this before, but it's going to be a tradition for me from here on。 。。。more

A Christmas Carol was good, but some of the other stories, like The Haunted Man, fell flat for me。

Of course it’s near perfect。

Worth reading once, considering it's a classic - but nothing I have to read each year for yuletide。 If you've seen the movies, plays, etc - you're probably not missing much plot or detail from the book (as rare as that is)。 Worth reading once, considering it's a classic - but nothing I have to read each year for yuletide。 If you've seen the movies, plays, etc - you're probably not missing much plot or detail from the book (as rare as that is)。 。。。more

A fantastic Christmas classic。Even those who haven't read the book know the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, and his transition from mean, greedy, lonely, and cold to kind, generous, happy, and compassionate。I love this story so much, in written and adapted format for various TV and films。 It's such a feel good and heartwarming story that can be enjoyed every year at Christmas time。I adore all Charles Dickens writing, but this book is definitely one of my favorites of his。 It's a wonderful journey wit A fantastic Christmas classic。Even those who haven't read the book know the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, and his transition from mean, greedy, lonely, and cold to kind, generous, happy, and compassionate。I love this story so much, in written and adapted format for various TV and films。 It's such a feel good and heartwarming story that can be enjoyed every year at Christmas time。I adore all Charles Dickens writing, but this book is definitely one of my favorites of his。 It's a wonderful journey with brilliant character development and lots of Christmas magic。I can't wait to read it again next year! 。。。more

What a joy to be reading this in the days before Christmas! Michael Slater's Introduction and Notes added greatly to my enjoyment of the Carol and other Dickens Christmas writings。 Tradition, Gospel, charity, remembering were all important to Dickens in his understanding and celebration of Christmas。 It would seem that he became a part of Christmas tradition with his regular seasonal writings which evoked all these sentiments。 A Christmas Carol remains an outstanding short story。 Despite being p What a joy to be reading this in the days before Christmas! This edition contained additional stories (and a poem), but I just read A Christmas Carol。 Overall the story is enjoyable and certainly well-written。 I think I particularly enjoyed the earlier parts of the book (Ghost of Christmas Past) the most, and when Scrooge’s heartless social policies are quoted back to him—probably the strongest portions of this short tale。 I’d say this should be a ‘must read’ for everyone; it is quick, entertaining, and ubiquitous with December culture in the West。

This is a delightful book and especially so when read around Christmas。 The best part of this collection is A Christmas Carol which I loved even more this time around than when I read it the first time。 I also really enjoyed the other stories and essays in this edition and my favourites were 'A Christmas Tree' and 'What Christmas is as we grow older' but they are lovely and really capture a part of Christmas。 This is just so good and a delightful read especially at Christmas time。 This is a delightful book and especially so when read around Christmas。 The best part of this collection is A Christmas Carol which I loved even more this time around than when I read it the first time。 I also really enjoyed the other stories and essays in this edition and my favourites were 'A Christmas Tree' and 'What Christmas is as we grow older' but they are lovely and really capture a part of Christmas。 This is just so good and a delightful read especially at Christmas time。 。。。more

*4。75This is a gorgeous collection of wintery/festive stories by Dickens。 I read the majority of this book over many evenings in December with soft music playing the background。 How beautiful and heart-warming! I particularly love the way he writes interactions between regular families during Christmas time。 Very special。

This is the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grouchy old man who isn't very kind and had no Christmas spirit。 In the book, Scrooge is visited by his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future。 He is forced to confront his actions, feelings, and thoughts about life, people, and holidays。 I really liked the character development that Scrooge went through。 I really love a ghost story, and I also really like the Victorian era。 It is filled with morbidi This is the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grouchy old man who isn't very kind and had no Christmas spirit。 In the book, Scrooge is visited by his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future。 He is forced to confront his actions, feelings, and thoughts about life, people, and holidays。 I really liked the character development that Scrooge went through。 I really love a ghost story, and I also really like the Victorian era。 It is filled with morbidity and darker themes, which are right up my alley。 During this time, a lot of stories features ghosts and paranormal things。 Also during this time, there was a sort of revival about Christmas。 There was a combining of older traditions with newer traditions, like sending Christmas cards, and it was neat to see all of the things that were incorporated into this book。 This is really one of my better liked classic books。 。。。more

Well worth reading Christmas Carol, despite knowing the story。 The book is so much better than all the adaptations。 The stories are mostly sketches about Christmas but the argument between the husband and wife in The Haunted Man is hilariously fantastic。

Most of us have seen the films based on Charles Dickens' classic tale A Christmas Carol--according to one count, there are 135 such films!--but I suspect many of us alive today have never read it。 And that, it turns out, is a shame。 While the more faithful adaptations portray most of the key ingredients of the novel, there is a twisty humor to Dickens' prose that generally doesn't come off in the films。 It sets in almost from the beginning when, in the second and third paragraphs, Dickens writes Most of us have seen the films based on Charles Dickens' classic tale A Christmas Carol--according to one count, there are 135 such films!--but I suspect many of us alive today have never read it。 And that, it turns out, is a shame。 While the more faithful adaptations portray most of the key ingredients of the novel, there is a twisty humor to Dickens' prose that generally doesn't come off in the films。 It sets in almost from the beginning when, in the second and third paragraphs, Dickens writes:Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail。Mind! I don't mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail。 I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade。 But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for。 You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail。It runs through the whole tale, surfacing now and again, right up to the end:Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them, for he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he thought it quite as well that they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins, as have the malady in less attractive forms。For all the great humor infused into the great adaptations of A Christmas Carol such as the classic production starring Alastair Sim, the Muppet rendition (one of my two favorite Muppet films, the other being Muppet Treasure Island), and Scrooged with Bill Murray, nobody has quite captured the glint I imagine must have been in Dickens' eye when he penned such lines。Short version: As the Great Gonzo says, "If you thought this was good, you should read the book!"P。S。 I principally bought this book for A Christmas Carol, but it also includes the short works "A Christmas Tree," describing a Victorian Christmas as seen through a child's eyes, "Christmas Dinner" in which the season overcomes the problems of a divided family as they are reunited for the holiday, and the Christmas chapters from The Pickwick Papers。 All are worthwhile reading, but a bit overshadowed, I feel, by the main attraction。 。。。more
